Flight Departures at Akureyri Airport (AEY)
Akureyri International Airport (AEY) has a single and small passenger terminal, but there are plans in place for building a larger terminal to be in operation by the later part of 2023. This is to partly be able to handle larger number of passengers in the future since the area is becoming more and more popular with tourists, but also to be able to handle larger planes and larger quantities of international flights, and also so the airport can better act as a support airport in case the larger airports on the island cannot be in use and flights have to be redirected.
On this page we will share information about amenities and services that are currently available at the airport, because it is important to know a thing or two before departing from a smaller airport.
How to Get to Akureyri Airport
Car - Drive southeast from Akureyri center, follow the signs to the airport. The ride takes only 5 minutes from the center.
Rental Cars - To return a rented vehicle, please follow the instructions given by the rental car company on where to park the car and how to return the keys. Make sure to collect all personal belongings from the vehicle before returning it, and to check it for any damage (which should also have been done at the time of collecting it). If the term of the rental states to return the vehicle with a full tank, make sure to fill it up before the return. See and compare all rental car companies at Akureyri International Airport.
Public Transportation Buses - The scheduled bus route that runs between the Campsite and the airport stops in various locations in and around Akureyri town center. The bus only takes 6-7 minutes from the most central bus stops, and a total of 35 minutes from it departs from the Campsite until it arrives at the airport.
There are between 3 and 6 departures every day of the week, all weeks of the year.
Have a look at our bus page for more information, route stops and scheduled departures and arrivals from the Campsite and the airport.
Hotel Shuttles - Check with your hotel accommodation if they offer a transfer service to the airport. These transfers are often subject to being requested in advance, but not always, and an additional charge.
Taxis - Taxis are available through request through usual channels of order. Ask the hotel reception, or call them yourself. Make sure you have enough time before your scheduled flight departure time.

Private Shuttles - To use the service of a private shuttle transfer to the airport make sure to request it in advance. This is a popular choice from locations outside of the town. Several companies are offering transfer to the airport services in the area.
Trains - Iceland does not have a railway service for public use.
Ferries - It is not possible to transfer to the airport by ferry, but if you are located on the island of Hrísey you have to first take the ferry to the mainland before you can use another means of transfer to the airport. The same goes for transferring from the island of Grimsey, unless you choose to transfer from there by one of the scheduled flights and transfer flights at the airport.
